Performance Art Workshops:
October: Galleria ScalaMata Venice, scalamata@gmail.com
November-March: ada studio Berlin www.ada77.de
This course is open for those who wish to experience an uncompromising process to seek originality in performance and those who are interested in the realization of their ideas. It requires the ability to commit to a continuous process and to a demanding attitude.
FreeDoMe of movement does not pretend to teach creativity but to awake its sources, offers guiding lines and feedbacks at the different stages of the process to produce a performance or an art project.
It aims to free the participant’s from 1000 acting methods and dance techniques. The process will start with a short introduction of some of the existing conventions that unconsciously narrow our MEANS OF EXPRESSION.
We will point out existing sets of rules/conventions in theatre and dance that restrict the artistic choice and we will practice the significance of the term “CHANGE “ in a research process and in a performance or an art project as a catalyst for new and unique ways of expression.
Finally we will challenge ourselves with one of the hardest tasks in Art in General and in Performance art in particular, ORIGINALITY!!!
We will seek to develop a unique artistic language.
We will learn particular exercises in order to maximise our presence and obtain wide ranges of expression.
We will discuss various aspects in realising multidisciplinary projects and the possibilities to merge different mediums as objects, text, (live) music and video.
We will confront our artistic ideas with the practical and technical side such as design of the space and planning of the lights.
We will present our process in a session, open for an audience.

Scan your body
Connect to the bowel of the earth, the above and the Ki energy
Stimulate your vital energy
Create your own movement
Dance your inner world
Butoh is an expressive dance that was developed in Japan in the 50’, 60’ and 70’ as an avant gard. A natural reaction to the traditional theatre forms as Kabuki and No on one side and reaction to the second World War and a rebel against the society of consumers on the other. Butoh has its roots in Japan but is practiced in many countries all around the world. It is confronted with various ways of expression, and the issue of the human condition. It enables crossing the borders of performance to other mediums in art and extending the term of dance.
One of the basic concepts of Butoh is the idea of movements that follows the structure of an individual body so there is no ideal body for Butoh dance and no specific technique to support it.
The essence of Butoh is its elusive character which prevents it of becoming a style or recognized as a genre that is defined under one definition. Its power lies within his unique attitude to the quality and durance of movement.
These classes/workshops aims to enable the participants a fascinating search of unique ways for expressing themselves and experience their individual dance.
In the Butoh sessions we will Follow the impulse which is born in our soul and within the hidden spaces of our bodies consciously and unconsciously, follow and escort it until it leaves our skin. We will learn to use the basic energy of our body through exercises based on organic movement, mimics, vocal and Noguchi gymnastic which will help us to increase our body awareness and regain flexibility.
Enlarge the spectrum of the movement of the body, by connecting to our "Tian-Den" the (Ki/Chi) energy point as an internal centre of the body, which enables the optimal use of our inner energy and the ability to recall external energy from our surrounding.
Sharpen our senses and experience Improvisation work based on freeing our imagination and
fantasies using the evocative power of images and metaphors drawn from nature.
We will connect to different sources of energy as mother earth, the sun, the moon, and the circle of life as birth- creation/construction, death/destruction and rebirth as a natural process and as part of our life circle.
Practice basic key elements as Butoh time, hanging, breath control, relaxation, extension, balance, and accumulation. Extreme intense quality of movement, metamorphosis, transformation and transfiguration (slow and fast changes), fragmented movement. and conscious/subconscious movement
…and basic principles as the “golden thread“ which refers to the relation between the body and the earth (and below) and the above and emphasises the relationship between the body weight and gravity. This image of being hanging with our heads on a thread, which is connected with the centre of the earth on one side and with the centre of the universe on the other side, offers us to transmit external influences into the body, enables to free the flow of energy through our bodies and to move organically.
Challenge new ways to present our body in movement, translate images and feelings inspired by our personal memories and use our intuitive pictures for strong presence and body sculpturing and translate personal images and emotions to impress.
