Born 1962 in Sendai, Japan, lives and work in
Venice.
Studied at the Academy of Master Suga Syouen
in Takaoka. Because of his vivid interest in
Italian bronze casting techniques, he moved
to Venice where he works since 1981 as a sculptor.
MASARU KASHIWAGI moulds his figures in bronze
with the elegant craftsmanship of one who knows
how to infuse his powerful energy and creativity
into clay, iron or bronze. The material seems
to follow the thought of the artist and bends
to the will of his expert hand. Masaru's elongated
and exaggerated forms, assume hinted and escaping
dimensions. The wide hips, the legs, sometimes
fragile and others times robust; the little
heads, apparently out of proportion, escape
the rigidity of the material through a game
of perspectives. It is enough to change the
point of view and the small head becomes bigger
and masters the scene highlighting the features
of the face in relief, the stomach deflates
and the powerful body flattens. Masaru plays
with the bronze and his sculptures play with
the viewer breaking up the prism of vision of
the onlooker who circles around them. In his
relieves, the figures rise from the smooth surface
of the material as if willing to exit from a
wall still wet.
